General Qualifications -

Program management, design and marketing to address environmental and safety requirements for companies and their products. Multinational corporate experience with international manufacturing and consumer product responsibility.

Manufacturing and Assembly operations using a variety of materials - including regulated materials that require special handling, product and process redesign because of regulatory reasons or customer specifications. Managing supply chain requirements through design specifications in the contract or purchase order. Experience with customer supply chain requirements. Product and process design changes. Managing electronic product redesign for EU RoHS and WEEE. Managed CFC elimination programs in the past.

Set up take back programs for packaging, batteries and electronics in Europe. Tracked the costs to better design the packaging and products.

Specialty Chemical manufacturing and use- Managing transportation, permitting and treatment for the use and manufacture of unique business proprietary chemicals.

International environmental requirements- Europe, China/Japan/Asia Pacific, Canada and US Federal and state laws and regulations.

Enterprise solutions that solve a problem by eliminating or changing problem into an asset. Prepare design and management roadmaps for planning and allocating resources for timely delivery of new products. Use SAP information feeds for a single set of books from which business units work. Integration with the existing business system allowing individual business units to craft their custom solutions.

Environment and Safety management and systems- Integrating business systems to add value while accomplishing the regulatory objective. Providing management with compliance status information and cost tracking certification and compliance with the Packing Essential Requirements and the EU take back directives.

Management Reporting- Monthly and annual reporting to enable management to track progress in their environmental objectives. Written in a tiered approach that allows the user to rapidly access additional information without clouding the “big picture.”

Stakeholder relations- Establish positive relationships with adversaries on environmental issues which foster a level of trust and communication. Deliver results that meet both clients’ and regulatory agencies’ requirements.

General Experience -

Environmental and Sustainability Reporting- Author of Polaroid’s annual environmental and sustainability reports which were written to GRI and CERES criteria.

Internal and External communication, editing and report writing- routine communications to employees to create awareness of new requirements which help them meet Company policy objectives. Includes writing the annual environmental report for a general stakeholder audience.

Legislative and regulatory strategy and negotiations- Chaired a technical committee opposing a major environmental legislative attempt to ban chemicals in Massachusetts. Testified on regulations and legislation.

Development of new programs- Created programs for meeting a variety of environmental and safety requirements, including a program to redesign all of Polaroid’s electronic products to eliminate lead, cadmium, chrome +6, mercury, and two brominated fire retardants

Cost Savings and Liability Reduction- Arranged for hazardous waste sludge to be sold as ore for metal recovery, saving more than $800,000 and eliminating long term corporate liability. Negotiated, designed, and built a storm water reuse system that allowed a critical manufacturing operation to continue without prohibitive capital expense. Simultaneously satisfied a compliance order, protected a public drinking water supply and conserved potable water.

Principals

Pamela Howland
Ms. Howland brings a wide range of business experience to Howland Greene. She gained her administrative and accounting experience in a variety of manufacturing, university, teaching hospital, consulting, real estate and fine arts areas. She manages the administrative aspects of client projects.

Stephen Greene
Mr. Greene brings more than 30 years of environmental knowledge and experience to Howland Greene’s clients. Using expert regulatory knowledge and team leadership skills he manages multi-disciplined teams that avoided business disruptions and save hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is an expert on product material restrictions (RoHS), take back (WEEE, Packaging and Batteries) and sustainable business practices.
